Debating Society

The Debating Society of SPCE aims at fostering and promoting the literary talents of budding technocrats in the institute. Be it quizzing, jamming, debating or creative writing, and or all of your skills are bound to be recognized and developed further in this institute. The society will be organising intra-college and inter-college debating competitions. It will also be responsible for sending teams which will represent SPCE at prominent debates across the city.

We encourage all those interested to not only participate in the events but also be actively involved with the development of the club as the year goes on.

Report on 10th Annual Inter-collegiate Debate (SPCE AD’ 22)

DATE: 12th and 13th November 2022

TIME: 10:00 a.m. onwards.

VENUE: Seminar halls and M.Tech classrooms, SPCE.

AUDIENCE: Participants from other colleges & students of SPCE.            

The Inter-Collegiate Debate held annually, provides a platform for young minds of our generation to nurture their debating skills and put forward their views and opinions on various intriguing and socially and economically relevant issues that we come across.

On the 12th and 13th of November 2022, Sardar Patel College of Engineering held its flagship debate competition, 'SPCE Annual Debate 2022. This was the 10th iteration of SPCE Annual Debate with a tagline for this year "Raise Your Words, Not Your Voice''. It was the first time that the SPCE Annual Debate took place in a Modified Asian Parliamentary Format.

The Day-One of the debate, 12th November 2022 commenced with the inauguration ceremony, followed by an address by the I/C Principal, Dr. M. M. Murudi. It was followed by the introduction of the panel of judges. With everything else set, the battle of wits began. We had an esteemed panel of speakers of house and scholars in their fields to grace this occasion and add to its splendour.

Prof. Kaisar Katchi

He is an Assistant Professor of Engineering Mechanics, Graphics, 3D Modelling & Printing Professor in the Applied Science & Humanities Department of Sardar Patel Institute of Technology with an M.Tech in Mechanical Engineering (Machine Design) from Sardar Patel College of Engineering. He is also the faculty coordinator for the industrial relations committee & mentor for SPIT’s E-Cell & Spark which is a student-run college magazine. He has been an experienced adjudicator specially for SPCE Annual Debate as well as Voice it Out Cultural Fest Debate.

Mr. Aniket Bomble

He has completed his 3 years LL.B. course from Government Law College Mumbai and has also completed his PG Diploma in IPR from Government Law College Mumbai. He also holds a bachelor's degree in Engineering from University of Mumbai in Printing and Packaging Technology. He has a keen interest in Dispute Resolution and Intellectual Property Rights.

Mr. Vaibhav Hari

He is an engineer-turned-lawyer who practices law as an advocate in India. He primarily practices litigation and dispute resolution in numerous cases involving civil, debt recovery, insolvency and real estate laws. He has pursued Bachelor's of Law (LLB) from Government Law College, Mumbai. Currently he is a legal associate at Wadia Ghandy & Co.

Dr. Ravi Prakash

He is an associate professor in engineering and technology and a TPO. He is also the wing lead of Netarhat Shreeman, NOBA GSR, and a member of MC-CSI Mumbai Chapter. He started his career with Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Engineering in New Delhi and worked with Shree L R Tiwari College of Engineering in Mumbai at the Research and Development platform. He is also currently the Dean and TPO at Bharat College of Engineering in Thane.

Mr. Saurav Patil

He is a Mechanical Engineer with a keen passion for books and squash. He has completed his Diploma from Agnel’s Polytechnic. He is the founder of VanAllen, where he has trained more than 2500 students and professionals. With a Sunday series on his youtube channel, he shares short stories through videos which give a strong message in different aspects.

16 teams from various colleges participated in the event. The first day witnessed some great debates on many socially and economically relevant parliamentary topics. The best eight teams qualified for the next round. With completion of the Elimination rounds, the second day, 13th November 2022, promised a deserving winner for the competition.

After two rounds of brilliant performance, the final two teams were:

The final motion –‘This house supports the decision of overturning Roe V Wade’ – invited several different ideas from both the teams.

The winning team received a cash prize of Rs.15,000 and the runner-up team received Rs.8,000. Adith Nair bagged the award for the ‘Best Speaker’. He received a cash prize of Rs.2,000.
